Enjoying the Area

We are only two miles from the historic village of Overton, mentioned in the Domesday Book. There are attractive shops and picturesque walks by the river Test. The Red Lion pub in Overton, serve excellent evening meals. We are also two miles from Whitchurch where there is an interesting silk mill. You can still purchase silk items made on the premises.

Churches

At the bottom of our garden is the small chapel of St Nicholas which is mentioned in the Domesday Book. It may have been built on the site of a pagan place of worship to the goddess Frig ( goddess of love and fertility) from which Freefolk takes its name.

There are many ancient churches in Hampshire including the 12th century church of Steventon where Jane Austen’s father was the vicar.

She was born here and moved to Chawton when she was 35. She is buried in Winchester Cathedral which is 16 miles from us.

Fishing

We are situated in the upper end of the Test valley. The river Test rises at Ashe five miles from us. It is one of the most famous chalk streams in the world. It passes by our grounds, and a carrier from it runs through our gardens.

The Test joins the river Itchen at Southampton from where it runs into the sea.

Walking and Cycling

There are many lovely walks near us. We are close to Watership Down a famous and renowned area of outstanding natural beauty..

The Wayfarer’s Walk crosses the B3400 at Dean about four miles from us. Lifts can be arranged. We also offer packed lunches and drying facilities for walkers and cyclists.

Stately Homes

There are many famous stately homes and National Trust properties in Hampshire. Highclere castle is nearby. [In it] are some interesting artefacts from the Tomb of Tutankhamen, the Earl of Caernarvon was in the party that discovered the tomb..

Laverstoke Organic Farm

We are close to the famous Laverstoke Park Organic Farm.
There is an excellent farm shop.

  • • Excellent horseracing takes place at Newbury - ten miles away
  • • Mottisfont Abbey famous for its rose gardens is 16 miles away
  • • Oakley Hall for entertaining and functions is five miles away

  • • Popham air field is five miles away and lifts can be arranged for those flying in
